Our Day

A Rhythm, Not a Bell Schedule

Our days together follow a gentle rhythm rather than a rigid timetable. Some mornings may linger over a living book, while others delight in the patterns of mathematics or the wonders of science. Afternoons often flow toward handwork, nature exploration, or group projects. This flexibility is the essence of the cottage school model — honoring the sparks of curiosity while maintaining a steady progression through the year.

Instructional Hours

We meet in-person on Mondays and Wednesdays, morning through early afternoon. During this time, our students partake in a generous feast of subjects, each lesson offering living ideas to nourish the mind and heart. We trust the Holy Spirit to guide each child in what to take as their own, while gently introducing them to the wonder and beauty of God’s world.

While most learning will take place as a whole group, students may sometimes work in smaller skill-based groups, particularly for reading, to receive enrichment or additional support.

 Home Learning

We will cover most of The Alveary subjects during our days each week. To ensure steady progress and a well-rounded education, it is important that families continue learning at home on the remaining three days—particularly in core areas such as mathematics and reading.

Students may have narration assignments to complete at home, allowing them to deepen their understanding of the topics explored in class. There may also be family read-aloud chapters to enjoy together, fostering meaningful discussion and shared learning experiences.

Homework will remain light and flexible, preserving the freedom and joy that make homeschooling so valuable, while still supporting consistency and growth in each child’s education.

Outdoor Learning

Much of our day is spent outdoors, in all kinds of weather. Students are invited to climb, balance, build, and imagine — discovering strength and joy in God’s creation. These activities are not distractions but vital parts of growth, supporting physical development, creativity, and confidence. We call this adventurous exploration — not reckless, but courageous.  While occasional scrapes and bruises may occur, these experiences teach children confidence, resourcefulness, and courage.

Habit Formation

At Willow Grove, we believe education is not only about lessons, but also about habits. Children learn to care for themselves, their belongings, and their environment — hanging coats, tidying supplies, helping one another. These small acts form the foundation of future character. As Charlotte Mason reminds us:

“Every day, every hour, the teacher is forming habits in the children upon which their future character depends.”

Family Field Trip Fridays

Once a month, we will host an optional Family Field Trip Friday..  These special days will offer an opportunity for the entire Willow Grove community—parents, other siblings, students, and teachers—to come together for fellowship at various local destinations. It’s a wonderful time to build relationships, enjoy time outdoors, and appreciate God’s creation as a community.
